Things to Do
Ten minutes from the middle of it
Himejima is a quiet address with a very fast connection. Osaka-Umeda is ten minutes on a single train, and from there the rest of Kansai opens up — Kobe in under an hour, with Kyoto an easy ride too.
Everything below is timed from Himejima Station, three minutes from the front door, and includes a normal wait for the train. Times shift a little depending on the hour.
Start here
Osaka-Umeda — about 10 minutes, no changes
The centre of northern Osaka: department stores, food halls, and Grand Green Osaka, the big new park by the station. The easiest first outing, and the one you’ll probably repeat.
Nakanoshima — via Umeda or Fukushima
The island between the two rivers, with the rose garden, the old public hall and riverside walking. Good on a day when you don’t want a schedule.
Classic Osaka
Namba & Dotonbori — about 26–28 minutes, 1 change
The neon, the running man, the street food. Go in the evening.
Shinsaibashi — about 28 minutes, 1 change
Shopping arcade, straight out of the station.
Kuromon Market — about 30 minutes, 1 change, then 3–5 minutes on foot
The covered market. Go before lunch.
Osaka Castle Park — about 27–28 minutes, 1 change
The park is free and enormous; the keep is a walk from the station.
Big days out
Universal Studios Japan — about 23–27 minutes, 2 changes
Two changes sounds like a lot; it isn’t, and you’ll be there before half the city has finished breakfast.
Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan — about 29–33 minutes, 2 changes, then about 5 minutes on foot
The whale shark, and the big wheel outside it.
Koshien Stadium — about 17–20 minutes, 1 change, then 3 minutes on foot
Home of the Hanshin Tigers, and one of the loudest crowds in Japanese baseball. If there’s a game on, go.
Kyocera Dome Osaka — about 22 minutes, 1 change, then 2 minutes on foot
Baseball and concerts. Very easy from here.
Kobe — Motomachi and Nankinmachi about 45–50 minutes, 1 change
Chinatown, the port, Harborland. A full day, and worth it.

When it rains
Noda Shinbashisuji — two stops. About 100 shops under a 370-metre roof, including specialists in eel and fish cake. Half a morning, no umbrella.
Amagasaki Chuo shopping arcade — four stops, toward Kobe. A much bigger covered arcade, around 600 shops end to end. A genuinely good plan for a wet afternoon, and not somewhere most visitors think to go.
If you have a car
There’s no parking at the house, but there’s plenty of coin parking nearby at roughly ¥500 for 24 hours. With a car, two more things come within about ten minutes:
- Gusto Tsukuda — a family restaurant, open 7:00–24:00 daily, non-smoking, free Wi-Fi, parking. The safest bet with children.
- McDonald’s Utashimabashi — open 24 hours, 28 parking spaces. For late arrivals and early starts.
Two things worth knowing
Only local trains stop at Himejima. Limited express and express trains go straight past. For anywhere beyond Umeda, change at Amagasaki or Daimotsu for something faster.
These times were checked in September 2026. Timetables change, so check before you set out.
